What to Bring
Northwestern College is pleased to provide excellent resident facilities. All the necessary room furniture (desks, tables, chairs, dressers, and beds) is provided. Each room or apartment has its own bathroom and kitchen/kitchenette (except Arden Hall, which does not have a kitchen/kitchenette in each room; however, there is a community kitchen on each floor). We have the following suggestions of important items, which relate to the uniqueness of these facilities or that would be helpful for you to bring:
- You need to bring your own bedding. The beds have extra-long mattresses which are 39" x 80". Extra-long fitted bed sheets are definitely preferable. Regular flat sheets will work, but regular twin-size fitted sheets will not fit these beds. You are strongly encouraged to bring a mattress pad.
- Although each room is equipped with overhead lighting (with the exception of Arden Hall which is not be equipped with overhead lighting), it may be helpful to bring additional lighting such as a floor lamp and/or desk lamp as needed. Due to potential fire hazard, halogen lamps are not permitted unless they are equipped with a wire guard.
- Telephones are permanently installed in residence rooms (except in Arden Hall where the availability of phones in each room is still yet to be determined). In the event of Arden rooms not having a phone, there will be public phones available on each floor. In other residence halls each room is equipped with a phone jack for an answering machine hook-up. In order to make long-distance calls from the room phone, you will need to use your own calling card.
- All rooms have been wired for College Network and Internet access. In order to use your computer in your room, you will need to provide your own network card and cable for your laptop. Internet cards are available in the College bookstore.
- Kitchen Supplies: dishes, silverware, pots/pans, cooking utensils.
- Cleaning supplies for kitchen, vanity, and bathroom: cleanser, glass cleaner, scrubbing pads, etc. Please bring only non-abrasive cleaners.
- Clothes hangers, wastebasket, and plastic garbage bags.
You are advised to contact your roommates to determine who will bring larger items such as ironing boards, small appliances, microwaves, etc. to avoid duplication as space is somewhat limited. However, Arden Hall will have a microwave and a mini fridge in each room. You can always bring more items to school later as you become aware of needs related to residence life. If you need to mail personal items to Northwestern, please plan to send packages to the Mail Center no earlier than the week of your arrival as they have limited space to store large packages.
