Enrollment Information for ENG2205 - 2007
The course ENG2205 Composition II is in high demand because it is required of all students completing a degree program at Northwestern College. It is also popular among students in our PSEO program. Despite the demand, class sizes are kept small to encourage plenty of online interaction within the class. Spring and summer semesters have the highest enrollments and many times students are placed on a waiting list. Due to the high demand for the course, the Center for Distance Education has developed a set of enrollment guidelines. Please carefully read through the information below.

ENG2205 is a challenging course that requires a significant time commitment each week. Interested students should read through the syllabus and course expectations (listed below) and strongly consider whether or not they can be successful in the course given their commitments during the semester.

Successful completion of a Composition I course and the Editing Competency Exam (ECE) are prerequisites for ENG2205. The ECE is administered near the end of ENG1105 Composition I (or on an individual basis for students who complete Composition I at another college). Students enrolled in ENG1105 cannot be guaranteed a place in ENG2205 until after they pass the ECE. The Center for Distance Education will not register any student in ENG2205 or send out course materials for ENG2205 until the ECE is passed.

A student enrolled in ENG1105 who does not pass the ECE on the first attempt is required to complete a remediation process before attempting the ECE a second time. If this happens, the student will forfeit his/her intended enrollment in ENG2205 to any student(s) who have already passed the ECE and are on the waiting list for the class.

If a student requests an extension for ENG1105, he/she may not enroll in ENG2205 for the upcoming semester. An intended enrollment in ENG2205 is forfeited.

Course Expectations
  • ENG2205 requires students to stay on track with the weekly lessons and due dates as outlined on the course site and the semester calendar. Students who do not keep up with the weekly lessons as assigned (due to reasons other than emergency situations in life) will not be allowed an extension.
  • ENG2205 is a research-based course. Because proper research takes time, this course will seem very intense at times (possibly up to 10 hours of work a week), especially during the main research phase of the course.
  • ENG2205 is a cohort-based course. This means that students will be working along side their peers at the same time they work through the weekly lessons. Students will be expected to critique other student work as well as to have their own work critiqued by classmates. This aspect of the course also emphasizes the importance of staying on track with weekly lessons and assignment due dates.
  • ENG2205 is formatted as an online writing workshop. This means that communication among classmates and between individual students and the instructor is of dire importance. The instructor will evaluate the student assignments submitted weekly through the course site and will give clear feedback on how students can improve their work. Students will need to be diligent in regularly checking the course site for their grades and instructor feedback on assignments.
  • Students who are planning to miss more than one week of ENG2205 Composition II must contact the instructor no later than the introductory week to discuss their situation and determine a plan, if possible, for completing missed work.
